TANGEDCO Net Metering: How It Works and How to Apply

What is Net Metering?

Net metering is a billing mechanism that allows solar panel owners to feed excess electricity back to the grid. TANGEDCO credits you for units exported, which are then adjusted against the units you consume from the grid at night or on cloudy days.

How Net Metering Works in Tamil Nadu

  1. 1Your solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours
  2. 2Excess power (beyond what you use) flows to the TANGEDCO grid
  3. 3Your bidirectional meter records both units consumed and units exported
  4. 4TANGEDCO adjusts your bill: (Units consumed from grid) – (Units exported) = Net bill
  5. 5If exports exceed imports, the credit carries forward to next month

TANGEDCO Net Metering Application Process

  1. 1Submit application to nearest TANGEDCO section office
  2. 2Technical feasibility study by TANGEDCO engineers (7–15 days)
  3. 3Receive sanction letter
  4. 4Install solar system through MNRE-empanelled vendor
  5. 5TANGEDCO installs bidirectional meter (7–14 days)
  6. 6Net metering goes live

Heliostrom handles the entire TANGEDCO application process on your behalf. This typically adds 3–6 weeks to the overall timeline but ensures zero rejection rate.

Net Metering Limits in Tamil Nadu

  • Residential: Up to 10 kW per connection
  • Commercial: Up to 1 MW per connection
  • The system size must not exceed your sanctioned load
  • Export rate: Same as import rate (1:1 net metering)
